Lloyd Alexander (1924-2007)
Lloyd Alexander, the acclaimed author of such books as the Chronicles of Prydain, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, just a few years before the Great Depression hit his stock-broker family hard. He attended and graduated from the Upper Darby High School, and then was sent by his parents to Haverford College, from which he did not graduate. Instead, he left to join the U.S. Army, was trained in Wales, and served in World War II. He then attended the Univesity of Paris and, in 1946, married Janine Denni. Though he had wanted to be a writer since childhood, it was not until 1955 that he published his first work, "And Let the Credit Go," and it was not until "The Book of Three" was published that he began to receive high reviews and praise. By the time of his death, two weeks after that of his wife (the two were married for sixty-one years), he had written over forty books and received several medals for them.
